How I work

The thinking, not just the screens.

Doughty Digital is new, so there are no client results to show yet. What I can show is how I work: three builds, the brief behind each, and the decisions that shaped them.

Maple Park Café

Thirsk, North Yorkshire

The brief

A café beside Maple Park Crematorium serves two very different visitors: walkers and locals after coffee and today's hours, and families arranging a funeral tea. The site had to welcome both without one feeling out of place next to the other.

Decisions

  1. Funeral teas get their own page, at its own address, because families share the link with each other. It's calmer: more white space, and a dark green button instead of orange.
  2. Opening hours change week to week and only lived on Facebook, so ‘This week's hours’ sits in the menu on every page.
  3. Orange is used once per page, on the main button and nowhere else, so the warmth never tips into a seasonal look.
  4. Built around the view, the room and the food, with no stock photography.

Steven Preston Plumbing & Heating

York, Malton & Selby

The brief

A Gas Safe plumber covering York, Malton and Selby. People land on a plumber's site with a problem, often on a phone, so the site has one job: get the call.

Decisions

  1. The number is never more than a thumb away: in the top bar (‘Boiler down? Call Steven now’), in the menu, and as a ‘Tap to call’ button that follows you down the page on phones.
  2. Trust comes before services: Gas Safe, same-day callouts and free quotes sit directly under the opening line.
  3. Written the way Steven talks: ‘done properly, tidied up after and explained in plain English’.
  4. Set up to be found locally: a page title and structured data built around York, Malton and Selby, and a service-area map.

Bespoke build

Doughty Digital

York · this site

The brief

A one-person studio up against York agencies, so the site has to be clearer than theirs, not louder.

Decisions

  1. Prices published on every service, because most competitors make you ask.
  2. One page per service, each written around what people actually search for.
  3. Built on the same platform clients get, so everything you see here is editable in the dashboard.
